a Collection of Waikato Times Columns

Foreword by Venetia Sherson - Editor Waikato Times

"Gordon Chesterman likes to recount that when he and I met, I was just a 'gymslip' of a girl. We were both journalists - he a worldly figure with a formidable reputation in newspaper circles; me a wide-eyed cadet reporter.

"In all the years I've known him, he has never lost his passion for news, nor his interest in the minutae of people's lives. That is what made him a good reporter and editor.

"I invited Gordon to join the Waikato Times' stable of columnists in 2001 because I knew he would bring to the page humour, anger, concern, sadness and nostalgia. He has delivered all of those and more. His subjects are diverse, ranging from ructions at City Hall, to a boxing match at Las Vegas, to the pleasures of drinking latte at a pavement cafe.

"One of the things I most enjoy about Gordon (apart from a shared love of newspapers) is his passion for Hamilton and the Waikato. Although he has lived and worked overseas, he has chosen to settle in the city where he grew up, and he writes about his home with knowledge and affection. His columns are about Waikato issues and Waikato people and they are the better for that. They are a weekly comment on the events that shape our lives.

"In his first year with the newspaper, Gordon has developed a loyal following as a columnist. He also attracts a fair share of letters to the editor - not all of them supportive. That shows he is read - and more importantly that he makes people think... That, of course, is the mark of a successful columnist."
