This is a magical fairy story with a twist: the witch does good deeds and the fairies are not so good. They are jealous that the witch is so successful that no one wants their services. So they make a spiteful wish which traps the witch inside her own silver Vesta matchbox for 150 years. Her rescue by three brothers jumps the story into our modern era and the contrasts between the past and present are explored. The witch rewards the boys for her rescue with a wish each. Wishes can work for good or can be selfish: the boys use their wishes wisely. A warm-hearted tale suitable for readers 7 to 10 years. Suitable for boys as well as girls. The book is written in chapters and fully illustrated in colour.

About the Author

Elizabeth Bridgeman has invented stories for children since she had her own two boys, often telling them a bedtime story which she made up on the spur of the moment. Some of these she wrote down but this is the first one to be completed and published. Having grandchildren spurred her to finish this one before they outgrew fairy stories. She has drawn the illustrations and created the book’s layout. She also writes short stories for adults and assists people with their own publishing projects. It was her grandson who suggested she write a sequel to this story, which is now being prepared for printing in 2025.
