This is a true story of a boy abandoned by his mother at eight years of age. He took a simple widget, a spanner and turned it into a multi-million dollar success story, becoming one of Hamilton’s most wealthy entrepreneurs with interests in farming, property and manufacturing.

Russ takes the reader from the heartfelt day coming home from school to discover his mother had stripped the house of its furniture. He made a promise on that day he would ‘never be poor or beholden to no bastard, ever’. He talks about prudent real estate investments and the importance of volunteer work to keep in touch with giving to the community. As a founding member of the New Zealand National Fieldays Society, he helped build this event into the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere.

Russ takes the reader on the highs and lows of his life’s journey. He served on the Hamilton City Council and became the city’s 30th mayor. He fought social injustices when he formed the ‘Band of Brothers’ to stop foreign predators from taking control of the local electricity company. The good guys won and turned a $40 million trust into a $400 million community owned debt free company.

Russ challenges the reader not to give up when the going gets tough, and emphasises the importance of turning setbacks into triumph.

He takes the reader through the most perilous oceans in the world as he sailed around Cape Horn, and then to the skies as he learnt to fly his own 1936 vintage Tiger Moth aircraft.

Russ proves that success is about tenacity, fairness and determination, about attitude and surrounding yourself with like minded friends. ‘Hand a Man a Spanner’ is about taking an opportunity with both hands and giving it a go.
